Hector's Dolphins

Dolphins are mammals of the sea.Mammals are warm blooded and give birth to live young.The smallest dolphins are 1.4m in length.Hector's dolphins are one of the four species of Caphalorynchus.



Hector's dolphins have no visible beak and a rounded dorsal fin.The dolphins forehead is grey with streaks of black on it.The tip of the beak is black and the throat and chest are white.Hector's dolphins bellys are white with a stripe running up the sides under the dorsal fin.When Hector's dolphins were born they were 9kg and grew to 40 to 60kg and live for about 20 yrs.



Hector's dolphins eat fish,squid and sometimes crustaceans.They chatch fish by chasing them using echolocation around the harbour.People don't detect many of the hundreds of gillnet set.Dolphins are endangered because they get entangled in nets and drown.



Hector's dolphins are unique to New Zealand.
